The Maine Department of Transportation is currently working on estimating a Highway Rehabilitation – CHIP -
Collector Highway Improvement Program project on Route 32 in the Towns of Vassalboro and Winslow for
advertisement of the subject project for competitive bids in March of 2023. The work will include milling of the
existing pavement and placing new pavement, including paving the existing gravel shoulder for an approximate total paved width of 28 feet. Construction will occur during the Summer and Fall; exact start and completion dates will be forwarded once a schedule from the Contractor has been reviewed and approved. This is an MDOT project projected to commence in the spring of 2023 and continue through March of 2027. The project calls for a partial closure of the bridge for the duration of the project, allowing east-bound traffic only from Waterville to Winslow. West-bound traffic will be detoured south to the Carter Memorial Bridge and north to Benton. There are likely to be some periodic full closures as well. The project has been advertised and two bids were received. The project has not yet been awarded. More information will be posted here as it becomes available.
Schedule:
- March 2023 Begin Construction
- Late-August/early September 2023 Detour Westbound Traffic over Carter Memorial Bridge while Eastbound stays on the Existing Bridge
- Early September 2023 Detour pedestrians to 2 Cent Bridge
- November 2024 Detour Eastbound and Westbound Traffic over Carter Memorial Bridge (full bridge closure, no traffic EB or WB on Ticonic Bridge)
- April 2025 go back to Eastbound Traffic and Pedestrians on Ticonic bridge while Westbound Traffic remains detoured over Carter Memorial Bridge
- September 2026 Open both Eastbound and Westbound Traffic on the New Bridge.
- May 2027 Construction Complete
